The Surry Hills Festival is shaping up nicely

Nestled in at the top of the ever-trendy suburb, The Surry Hills Festival is back once again this year, promising a flourish of music, colour and delectable food.

With just two weeks to go, the final line-up has been released, boasting a rich array of musicians from home grown heroes to Triple J mainstays. The already announced NOIRE, The Stiffy’s and Sons of East will be joined by the rapidly rising I Know Leopard, who have been making waves at Triple J recently, taking out the Triple J Unearthed Laneway Festival prize. Lyre Birdland will deliver a smattering of reggae, while The Civilians and Lucy Lowe will cover some acoustic and indie-rock.

But most interestingly perhaps, is an appearance from local gang High Top Brass Band. The ten-piece brass band will be blasting their horns across the suburb, and apparently like to indulge in some sneaky hip hop beats as well. Plus if you’re in the market for spotting the next big thing, the Australian Institute of Music will be putting their best students on show.

Perhaps you’re an aspiring musician yourself? Well, Surry Hills has that covered too. Put pen to paper and write some inspired lyrics about your love of Surry Hills, because the winner of The Surry Song Comp will grab a professional recording session at AIM and a chance to perform on the day. Pro tip: the words Messina and gelato must be included.

The Surry Hills Festival is more than just music though. Sit down and camp out with a picnic and enjoy the beats or peruse around the markets, snapping up some antiques or even take a look at the eye catching art installations around the laneways and pop-up stalls.

Or, you know, head across the road and get a gelato Messina.

Whatever you end up doing, it’s going to be a good time.
