Siouxsie Sioux releases her first single in eight years

Banshees frontwoman and post-punk legend Siouxsie Sioux has returned with her first new song in eight years. I should take this moment to explain how deep a love I have for the Banshees. A hugely influential band in my personal musical journey, it’s really cool that years late, decades after the post-punk heyday, Sioux is still making awesome tunes.

Anyway, Love Crime was created alongside composer Brian Reitzell for the finale episode of TV show Hannibal, a psychological thriller based on well-known characters from the novel Red Dragon, which went on to inspire the awesome Hannibal film series about a cannibalistic serial killer.

Speaking to TV Guide, showrunner Bryan Fuller provided the lowdown:

“She hasn’t had a single in eight years, and she said she hadn’t been inspired to write in a long time, but that Hannibal had inspired her and she would write a new song. It was an incredible honour. I told her it should be a love song between Will and Hannibal. She came back with this wonderful Bond theme of a ditty, and I just said that has to go over the finale. It was pitch-perfect.”

The haunting track is spooky, atmospheric, and with an Eastern flair – exactly the kind of sound I love from Sioux. Slow and slinky, the temperate rhythm, emotive strings and instrumental layers correlate so well with her distinctly rich voice. This is a beautiful, haunting, surprising, and excitingly unique track.

Interestingly, even though the show has actually been cancelled, the costs for the song were divided between Sky and NBC.

It’s been assured that the track will receive an official release separate to the show. Reitzell, who met Sioux back in 2006, went on to tell EW that he’s actually already working on music more music with Sioux. Hell yes!
