Shining Bird drop new single just in time for Spring

How appropriate. On the second day of Spring, as the magpies begin to sharpen their beaks and select their next victims, experimental pop group Shining Bird have unveiled a new single. Unfortunately (but also fortunately), their new song Rivermouth will do little to scare away the magpies – as it is a deliciously heavy, brooding single that is more likely to attract a crowd of magpies for a listen than repel them.

Dane Taylor’s voice is the star of the tune – with a voice so raw and deep it feels as though it might just fall through the floor. True to its name, it takes the listener on a poetic journey of the NSW landscape at a lazy, slow afternoon pace. The gang from Austinmer in NSW first found success for their experimental pop from their debut album Leisure Coast which attracted a gush of praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and Sydney Morning Herald.

Russel Webster has said that the song, while symbolic of many issues, became symbolic of the creative process of the song itself. Meta, right? They stuck with the song for a long time before they felt satisfied, but the wait was worth it. Even if you’re not going to buy it for the music, buy the song for the album artwork. Like their other releases, Paul Ryan has worked his magic with a paintbrush and featured a magpie in full flight in the same style as his recent Archibald Prize piece (the image on the Souncloud link).
