Hip-Hop wonder-kid Dylan Joel has been riding a pretty decently sized wave of success as of late. Fresh from his slot as the main support for Seth Sentry‘s recent national tour, he’s just announced he’s hitting the road for his first ever solo tour in support of his debut album, Authentic Lemonade. The current single Blank follows previously released Swing and Numbers. All three tracks have been occupying some pretty impressive airtime with Blank putting the Melbourne MC’s flair as at singer at the forefront, supported by a vibrant, catchy hook you’re sure to hear all over the place.
The open and chorus of Blank do admittedly, leave something to be desired: it feels as though there’s a significant element missing from those particular sections and they take a while to warm up to. The loop of “blank for days” is a bit confusing and perhaps unnecessary. Joel has a great singing voice, but it’s not supported as well as it could be throughout this track. The verses however, come rapid and fluid with influences from across the wide spectrum of Aussie Hip-Hop prevalent but never holding a sense of imitation. The song takes a few listens, but it does seep in and settle down as a decent track that introduces Joel’s talents as both a singer and rapper with the verses particularly enjoyable and making up for a somewhat confusing loop. The overall vibe of the track is one of a summer-time staple that should serve as a decent introduction to the upcoming album, as well as push Joel further into the spotlight as a great multi-talented artist.
Having been on the scene for a while now, Joel has a earned himself status as a solid multi-talented rapper, vocalist and musician. Having worked with some of the biggest names in Australian Hip-Hop (including quite possibly the nicest dude ever: Mantra, who features with DJ Izm on Swing), Joel has been building up to this debut album and solo national tour for some time now.
