In a strange move that has his followers on their toes, Ryan Adams has released enticing tidbits of an upcoming album covering Taylor Swift’s 1989 in full via Instagram. The alt country troubadour announced that he had put a twist of The Smiths on Tay Tay’s super infectious pop hits, and to be honest, it’s much better than it sounds.
The covers inject fresh life into the songs, with Adams’ signature emotive vocals. Blank Space stands out, with it’s softly spoken finger picked delivery, giving new meaning and added maturity to the song. The darker and rockier version of Shake It Off doesn’t quite hit the same mark, but is interesting in it’s moody layers. There are plentiful strings throughout, and a deftness of touch that shows a real respect and appreciation for the original tracks. The wonderful thing about covers is they stitch together a piece of the performer and the creator, and the union between Adams and Swift is a happy one.
