Amy Schumer: comedian turned rapper?

Recently in town to promote her new film Trainwreck, comedian Amy Schumer now seems to have taken something of a career sidestep.

This week she was performing at Constellation in Chicago, where she was to provide the night’s comedy, alongside a musical performance from hip hop legend Talib Kweli and other musical guests. (Yes, we can all stop for a moment and dream about a venue where two such talented, not to mention entirely different kinds of artists are somehow booked to perform at one event together).

But Schumer delivered way more than jokes, as has been well documented on Instagram. When it was Kweli’s turn to take the stage, he pulled Schumer up on stage to join in a rendition of Kanye West‘s Get ‘Em High. The track, off West’s The College Dropout, originally featured Kweli and Common. Schumer delivered the female vocals, which had been originally recorded by West’s then-girlfriend Sumeke Rainey.

Here’s some fan footage from the night:

Schumer performs a lot of musical sketches on her comedy show Inside Amy Schumer. Considering she’s also set to open for pop star Madonna on her upcoming US tour, who knows – maybe there really is a musical career in her future!

Talib Kweli will be visiting Australia soon for Soulfest, where he’ll be performing solo material as well as a set with Mos Def, as the legendary Black Star. Read our recent interview with Kweli here.
