Although his biggest hit Never Gonna Give You Up was released 28 years ago, Rick Astley has still managed to stay relevant thanks to the Internet. ‘Rickrolling’ has become one of the most popular Internet memes ever, putting Astley’s name back in the pop culture spotlight.
Don’t worry, this is not a rickroll.
Astley has covered a more recent hit by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson at Saturday’s Let’s Rock London music festival in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Uptown Funk’s 80’s inspired medley seems perfect for what is said to be “the Ultimate 80’s Festival” and, as you can see below, Astley did a fantastic job. Not only did he sing the track in its entirety, he showed the eager crowd that he still has the moves, dancing along to the tune. The audience even sang along with him, proving the performance was a huge win for Astley.
So, with Ronson playing at this year’s Splendour In The Grass, can we expect a surprise appearance by Astley to sing the vocals? Probably not.
But you never know, in 28 years or so Uptown Funk could be the next ‘rickroll’. Prepare to get Ronsonrolled, people.
