Ty Segall Debuts New Track and Covers Neil Young

Ty Segall recently showed that he is a man of many faces when he stepped away from his psychedelic glam rock steeze and took to NYC stages for a short run of acoustic shows. The California native was accompanied by Cory Hanson, from Wand and treated audiences to something stripped back and entirely different.

At the Mercury Lounge on Friday night, Segall debuted a disarming new track, not giving away it’s title, but simply stating at the onset it’s “about a tree growing inside an aeroplane” and then at the finish “I lied, it’s a love song.” With wistful lyrics like “You’re a beautiful lazy, orange coloured lady, the morning sun, wants to know where you go,” it’s certainly a bit of both.

It is not clear if the song has been written as an acoustic number or will appear with full instrumentation in a future version. Taking it in for the first time here, it sounds stellar as it is, and leaves hope for the former. Check it out in the below video starting at around 2:45.

If you want to pay homage to an inspiration, you might get a tribute tattoo, or you might cover their music. When it comes to Neil Young, Segall has now done both. At Baby’s All Right on Wednesday night he belted out the track For The Turnstiles. Apologies in advance: the snippet below is bound to leave you wanting more.

Hopefully we will be seeing more of this softer side of Ty Segall soon.
