I don’t usually write much about live gig gossip, but this is too immense to not share.
Last month came the news that Run The Jewels were opening for Jack White at Madison Square Garden in New York City. It took a while to process this. Their albums were my two favourite albums of 2014 and in general, they’re basically my favourite artists at the moment – not just Jack’s solo stuff and RTJ, but White Stripes, Raconteurs and Dead Weather, plus El-P and Killer Mike‘s back catalogues… all in all, wow.
The weirdest part was how unexpected it is. One is hardcore hip hop and one is blues rock. Not your average match.
Anyway, the gig happened yesterday. Being all the way over here in Australia, I used social media to experience severe FOMO.
By all accounts, it was absolutely amazing. El-P himself had this to express:
What’s more? Rage Against The Machine‘s Zach De La Rocha came out for a blistering, fucking explosive rendition of Hottest 100-voted Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck).
What’s MORE? Jack White brought out Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest to guest verse on Black Bat Licorice, my favourite track on Lazaretto. Not only did he join in White’s song, but he infused it with Tribe’s Excursion.
Overall, an immense headline set featuring songs from both of White’s solo albums, the White Stripes’ back catalogue and Raconteurs.
The show is streaming for the next three days on Pandora, click here to access.
Oh and finally, this:
