LORDE LIVE

Lorde Returns to the Stage at LGBTQ Youth Event

The script for 2013-2015 read like something of a legend for New Zealand teenager Ella O’Connor a.k.a Lorde.

From the last-minute drop in to Splendour In The Grass to international stardom, performances alongside Nirvana and Grammy Awards, everything fell spectacularly into place for the teenager who seemed unperturbed by her sudden fame.

2016 however has seen the singer go mysteriously tight-lipped as she finished off her highly anticipated follow-up album, recently telling fans on her Facebook that it was “coming soon.”

Despite all the speculation about when we would see new material from Lorde, last night’s Third Annual Ally Coalition, held to support the youth of the LGBTQ community, marked the first time she has been on stage in over six months, pulling out a surprise cover of Robyn’s Hang With Me.

The line-up, which already featured the likes of Chvrches, Carly Rae Jepsen and Charlie XCX, had promised to be special, with Lorde’s appearance proving to be the icing on the cake.

With only a piano to accompany her, Ella performed the song alongside fun.’s Jake Antonoff in a display of tender vocal control. Other performances on the night included Lauren Mayberry belting out a stirring rendition of Katy Perry’s Firework and Charlie XCX dropping her own track Boom Clap.

In addition to working on her own music, Lorde has also had a busy 18 months collaborating with other artists including her well-known work alongside Sam Smith and Disclosure. Who knows who we could see her alongside in the new year.
