Kanye West Given Four Minutes Free Rein at the VMA’s

You might remember that Kanye West and the VMA’s have some history. Or at least Taylor Swift remembers. So the news that the producers of MTV’s 2016 Video Music Award have given Kanye free rein to do whatever he likes at the show, for four whole minutes no less, is either exciting or terrifying or both.

According to a source “close to the production”, organisers have given Kanye complete license to “rap, sing, dance or even just stay silent”. At this point they are reportedly expecting big things from ‘Ye, but “we’re told show producers are totally clueless which door he’ll pick.”

You would have to have been living under a soundproofed rock (without wifi or a personal hotspot) to have missed Kanye’s steady manoeuvring into a world outside of simply making music. With that in mind, it does seem that the possibilities as to what he’ll do are far from limited. There is also a strong possibility that audiences may be on the receiving end of another of Ye’s crazed creative delusions.

Having performed at the VMA’s six times previously, the show has played host to more than a few of Kanye’s weirder moments. In 2009 he famously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech for Best Female Video and last year, as Swift presented him with the Vanguard, we were treated to a memorable acceptance speech from Ye. After thanking a “gracious” Taylor, he went on to question his fashion choices in that moment, blame it on the alcohol and struggled through a rambling explanation – which came close to an apology. He also declared that he would run for president in 2020 after a rant at MTV, a statement we’re still unsure is serious or not.

So who knows what we will see this year. Alongside Kanye, the VMA’s will feature performances from Future, Ariana Grande with Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears with G-Eazy, Nick Jonas with Ty Dolla $ign, and the Chainsmokers with Halsey. Also Rihanna, who will receive this year’s Vanguard Award. Kim Kardashian-West will be among the presenters, along with Jaden Smith.

All in all this year’s VMA’s promise to be appointment viewing, and we’ll be waiting to see what ‘Ye can do with just four minutes to save the world…
