Against Me! to Explore Transgender Romance on Next Album

Following up from 2011’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues, Florida punk outfit Against Me! have announced details of their seventh studio album.

A concept LP, Shapeshift With Me will focus upon themes of romance, but from a trasngender perspective. “For me, having always been in a punk band that was expected to be political, I never felt like I had that option to write about feelings in that way. That’s what I ended up being drawn to this time. It’s writing in a way I thought I could never write before, and not giving a shit about expectations,” shared frontwoman Laura Jane Grace.

While the album will be touching on trans issues, it will shift its focus away from gender rights to explore some less charted territory. “There needs to be more records about trans rights and everything like that, but feeling like I already did that, I wanted to move on to write commentary on living from a trans perspective,” Grace reveals. “I wanted to write the transgender response to the Rolling StonesExile On Main St., Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville and the StreetsA Grand Don’t Come For Free. All those records are relationship records.”

The group have also shared with fans the first single from Shapeshift With Me, 333 . Despite their frontwoman’s claim of more placid thematics, the single still packs plenty of bite.

The album will drop September 16th via Total Treble and will coincide with Laura Jane Grace’s memoir Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout, also coming this November.
