Watch Aphex Twin’s First Music Video in 17 Years

If anything’s going to show you just how important a visual component to music is in 2016, it’s this. Enigmatic producer Aphex Twin has just unveiled his first video clip in a massive seventeen years. Also, it was directed by a twelve year old Dubliner named Ryan Wyer.

The track is called CIRKLON3 [ Колхозная mix], but don’t ask me how to pronounce any of that. It will feature on an upcoming EP titled Cheetah, set for release on July 8 via Warp Records / Inertia.

Wyer is behind a Youtube channel known as epic1:40d Gaming, which is apparently where Aphex Twin discovered his work. The clip is very strange, as you probably expect from a 12-year-old’s take on an Aphex Twin video. It essentially features Wyer’s mates dancing around while wearing Aphex Twin t-shirts, with a few appearances of the well-known Richard D. James mask, which first appeared on the cover of his 1996 release, the Richard D James Album.

Check it out:

Look this is probably a contentious opinion, but, really? Would people find artistic merit in this video if it didn’t have the names Aphex Twin or Warp Records attached? Maybe I’m just being a little harsh and world-worn, or maybe I’ve lost my sense of humour, or maybe I’m just too old to understand what’s cool on the internet these days, but this doesn’t exactly feel special or innovative. Particularly for his first video in almost two decades. Then again, maybe that’s the point. Probably. I don’t know.
