There’s no doubt that 2016 has been the year of hype. TLOP, VIEWS, and now Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. The Lonely Island written movie, set to satirise the fuck out of Justin Bieber and every other young male singer and boyband, has been getting tonnes of attention since it was announced back in March. Rightfully so too, with a cast that includes Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows, Maya Rudolph, and a slew of huge and so far unannounced figures within the music industry.
Today, the next trailer for the mockumentary has been put up, giving us a better idea of just how far the Lonely Island boys are going to go. Following the failure of his latest record, with cover art reminiscent of a lot of German WWII propaganda, Conner (Andy Samberg) goes full gimmick to win back the love of his fans. Magic tricks, Adam Levine holograms and an LED head for his DJ (no doubt a pisstake at Deadmau5) backfire horribly, and Conner is forced to return to his boyband roots. We also get a glimpse of Seal in a cameo role, before he’s brutally mauled to death by wolves. Yikes.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is set to be one of the biggest comedies of the year – with the Lonely Island thankfully making their return to both writing for screen, and parody music. It remains to be seen how stars like Biebs are going to take the pretty brutal depiction of their characters, but following his cameo in Zoolander 2, maybe we’ll even be seeing him on screen? Time will tell – see it June 3rd.
