Sad Grrrls Fest is Australia’s Biggest Female-Fronted Music Festival

So often, we find that festival lineups bear depressingly small numbers of female acts, be it solo artists, female-fronted bands, electronic producers and so on. Luckily, Sad Grrrls Festival is here to save the day.

Run by the brilliant Sad Grrrls Club, the festival is flipping that notion on its head, and this week announced two events across Sydney and Melbourne. Now in its second year running, the Sydney festival will occur on October 8 at Factory Floor in Marrickville, and will feature artists including Le Pie, Coda Conduct (who just dropped a wicked new video) and one of my favourite Sydney two-pieces, Twin Caverns. Meanwhile, the Melbourne event will feature JAALA, Jess Ribeiro and Camp Cope, and will take place at the Reverence Hotel Footscray on October 1.

As well as the music, punters can look forward to market and food stalls, DJs and more at both locations. On top of the aforementioned acts, others including Sydney’s Stellar Addiction and Sad Grrrls Club co-founder Rachel Maria Cox will perform in Melbourne alongside Simona Castricum, Miss Destiny, Beloved Elk and more. The Sydney event will also see the uber talented MC Dawn Laird alongside the amazing Bad Bitch Choir, another of my favourite Sydney duos Bow & Arrow, Missing Children and plenty more.

On last year’s inaugural event, Cox says that, “not only that women and non-binary people felt comfortable being on stage, but that we implemented safer spaces policies to help the audience feel safe as well.

“Sad Grrrls Fest is as much about the audience as it is the people up on stage. Music needs to be safe and inclusive for people of all genders, sexual orientations, races, religions and socio-economic status if we want to really make meaningful change to representation by the numbers.”
