A few months back, it was announced that a new benefit would be held to honour and encourage women in music. Put on by the Girls Rock Camp Foundation, the foundation set out to put on a gala called Girls To The Front. As we highlighted in February, “GRCF serves as the umbrella funding body for more than 45 Girls Rock Camps across the United States, and recently was held in Canberra as well” – Girls Rock Camps being a camp for young girls to learn instruments and create songs. One of the best things about the gala was that sister trio Haim were confirmed to play, and now footage of that performance has started to trickle online.
Haim came into the picture after they openly discussed their desire to put on a Lilith Fair (a concert tour that was put on by Sarah McLachlan in the 90s that consisted solely of female solo artists and female-led bands and raised millions of dollars for charity). “We talk about this all the time, how there aren’t enough female-represented bands and artists at festivals,” Este Haim said in an interview. “You don’t see them. And it’s really sad for us. We came up with the idea basically of why can’t we just bring back a festival that’s just ladies.” It was this desire to make women in music more visible that made the trio an obvious choice to play at the benefit – but those in attendance were treated to more than just a Haim show.
Choosing to cover Fleetwood Mac‘s Dreams, Haim wowed the audience (who were squeezed into a packed room) with their own rendition of the song, plus a few originals. It’s yet to be revealed what GRCF’s next move will be, but judging from the attention this performance as well as the benefit itself received, it will be interesting to see what they do next!
