LISTEN: ScHoolboy Q Drops Surprise New Single “Groovy Tony”

Well if this news doesn’t rev you all the way up. Following a not-so-cryptic Tweet from founder Anthony Tiffith earlier today, it was reported that we would have a fresh new release from an unnamed member of the hip-hop Avengers in Top Dawg Entertainment.

This was huge news considering how well their last surprise release, went, so you can tell exactly how excited we all were for what was to come. Tiffith had already laid out the detailed plan for TDE releases earlier this year like it was the Marvel Universe, so it was plausible that he could have been talking about any of its associated artists with his Tweet this morning.

All we were praying for was that this wouldn’t be another TIDAL fuckup exclusive.

Wonder no further though, because it’s a brand spanking new single from Black Hippy cornerstone Quincy Matthew Hanley: the artist better known as ScHoolboy Q. Titled Groovy Tony, the single has just been released on Apple Music and you can have yourself a listen here as well as a watch of its accompanying music video:

This is the first taste of what is to come on ScHoolboy Q’s latest, as-yet-untitled fourth studio album. A follow-up that has some incredibly lofty expectations after the enormous success of his third LP Oxymoron in 2014.  It’s a gritty and grimy banger, a minimalistic backbeat over which ScHoolboy spits in his trademark sneer. His violent and nihilistic rhymes weave a narrative of an antihero surviving and thriving around narcotics, theft and murder all with a perpetual ‘blank face’.

ScHoolboy Q paints a chilling portrait of street life in Groovy Tony and it seems as though he’s picking up exactly where he left off with Oxymoron, a record absolutely riddled with certified bangers and one that left fans old and new positively salivating for more new material from the South Central MC.

No further details yet on when his next album is due but one would have to presume that it’s in the very near future after today.
