Pussy Riot Plan to Open a Women-Only Museum

Trailblazing group Pussy Riot are no strangers to railing against the patriarchy, and are certainly not afraid of a little controversy. The Russian rock band warned that 2016 was going to be filled with a lot more Pussy Riot, and now they have announced their plans to develop and open a women-only museum.

Set to be established in Montenegro, one third of the band, Maria Alyokhina, revealed the band’s plan in an interview with Artnet. The New Balkan Women’s Museum will be set up by women, for women and will be about women. Employees will also be all women, as will curators and artists showing there thus taking the concept of #girlpower to a whole new and exciting level.

Flavorwire went on to point out that despite an increase in women running museums, that statistic is still only at 42.6% in 2014 according to recent surveys. They also pointed out that these museums that do happen to be run by women often work with smaller budgets, and the pay gap still exists between men and women. Representation of female artists is also increasing too, which would seem positive if not for the statistics on that as well. The Tate Modern sat at 25% of shows that have been dedicated to women since 2007, whilst the Guggenheim has gone from 0% in 2000 to 14% in 2014. Clearly, this needs to happen.

Pussy Riot gave an interview with Noisey back in November of this year, in which they said they planned on releasing “a lot of disturbing videos next year”. “We hope that you will not like them,” they said.
