REVIEW: NO LIMIT SOUNDS 2015 DJ COMP FINALISTS

Words by Emily Rorich

The No Limit Sounds 2015 dance music festival recently offered aspiring DJs the opportunity to play at the event this Saturday in Bathurst, NSW. The line-up features Savage, Joel Fletcher and Some Blonde DJ. The winner of the DJ competition has officially been announced, but I decided to check out three of the talented finalists.

Finalist 1:

DJ BENNY T

As this mix begins, I feel like I am either dreaming or high. It’s a magical feeling, but a fleeting one, as I quickly find myself bouncing up and down instead. It’s as if I’ve suddenly awoken from my dream and found myself in the middle of a club. That’s the problem with this track – it moves far too abruptly from one piece of sound to another, leaving me confused and frazzled. However, the last note is a nice and clean finish.

Could I see myself raving to this? It would keep me on my toes, but yes.

Overall rating: 4/5

Finalist 2:

WEBZ

WEBZ loses points here for the fact that the first four minutes of this track contains nothing but Jason Derulo singing about how much he wants to “get up next to you”. Sleaze. But WEBZ gains points here for the fact that this track consistently moves from one sound to another smoothly. He has also matched the music and singing very well, choosing to use lots of pop songs that I can easily sing along to. Bonus points are given for the fact that between 12:30 and 13:50 I feel like I am an avatar in a video game, and that is a fun feeling.

Could I see myself raving to this? Yes. I like that near the end of this track are some calmer notes where I would be able to catch my breath in preparation for my next dance move.

Overall rating: 4.5/5

Finalist 3:

DJ K9

DJ K9 is clearly wise with his song selections, as this track transfers from one sound to another with ease. The best thing about this mix is its use of old-school goods (as well as newer tunes), such as Praise You like I Should, bringing back many memories. The track ends with Robin Schulz and Francesco Yates’ Sugar – a modern take on the classic Suga Suga, and thus the perfect and most clever way to summarise and conclude this mix.

Could I see myself raving to this? Yes. I’d go back in time with K9.

Overall rating: 5/5

Note: DJ K9 has officially won the competition and will perform at the festival this Saturday.
