Spotify launches “Musical Map: Cities of the World”

Analysing nearly 20 billion tracks from cities around the globe, Spotify has released a detailed, interactive Musical Map. The musical map provides insight into the music that is popular in different cities. It goes pretty deep, getting it right down to specific suburbs in some cases (for example, Brunswick in Melbourne).

Though many countries have the same Top Singles, this map looks at a more localised taste, and the results are really interesting. To keep up with the local buzz, you can find an updated 100-track city-specific playlist updated every fortnight. As Spotify explains: “Each playlist represents the most popular songs and artists in that particular region and these will continue to update (every fortnight) as Spotify users continue to access their favourite music.” It also means that users can see what is popular in other places where Spotify is available, perhaps opening listeners up to an entirely new world of music.

At the moment, Australia’s Musical Map shows that we’re favouring a bunch of homegrown talents including Hermitude (Brunswick and Brisbane), Chet Faker (Sydney) and Drapht (Perth, Adelaide, Hobart).
