Noel Gallagher tops the list for the best-selling vinyl of 2015 (so far)

Back in April, Official Charts Company (the UK compilation of various official UK record charts) set up their first ever vinyl-chart. The OCC compiles all its charts by gathering and combining sales data from retailers (any retailer who sells more than 100 chart items per week gets included in the count), claiming to cover a massive 99% and 95% of the singles and album markets respectively.

With vinyl records experiencing an exponential increase in sales over the past decade, it makes sense to track what sells the most records – reissues or new releases? So far, the countdowns are mostly made up of the former, with the Top Ten Albums and Singles Charts heavily featuring Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and Pink Floyd

However, topping both charts last Friday (The Official Vinyl Albums Chart and Official Vinyl Singles Chart are available every Friday via the website) was one Noel Gallagher, with new releases from his band High Flying Birds. The band’s album Chasing Yesterday holds the Number One spot, and High Flying Birds also have a stronghold on the single’s chart with their singles singles Riverman, Ballad Of The Mighty I and The Dying Of The Light taking out the top three spots.

Still, it isn’t all reissues and Gallagher releases appearing on the charts. Last week’s countdown of the Top 10 Vinyl Albums and Singles of 2015 so far also featured Blur, Royal Blood. Artic Monkeys, Mark Ronsen and Sufjan Stevens. You’ve got to go a bit further down the list before you can find any women on the chart, with the highest placing album by a female artist being the late, great Amy Winehouse and her 2006 release Back to Black placing at No. 18.

Other women to appear in the Top 40 (including acts that feature women) are Courtney Barnett (Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit at No. 23), Florence + the Machine (How Big How Blue How Beautiful at No. 27), Fleetwood Mac (Rumours,  No. 29), Belle & Sebastian (Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance at No. 36), Björk (Vulnicura at No. 37) and Wolf Alice (My Love Is Cool, No. 40).
