Why A$AP Rocky Having an Orgy Is NOT News

*Sigh* I wonder when the world will get past putting sexual conquests in the news. Is it still really that big of a deal that someone banged someone else, regardless of genders/numbers of those involved/locations? Unless it was criminal activity and serves a purpose for society, can we NOT report on it? Are we all still secretly 12 where we feel the need to pat men on the back every time they have sex? Why is sex – a totally natural, human thing to do – still, in 2015, such a big deal?

These were my thoughts this morning as I woke to a newsfeed gradually filling up with news that A$AP Rocky had taken acid and had not one, but three orgies. I didn’t even have to read any of the articles I saw to know what they would say – that Rocky was killing it, his SXSW was better than yours, classic Rocky, lots of puns about being “Wild For The Night or his “F*cking Problems”. But really, newsworthy? Hardly.

Can we also, just for a second, have a moment of silence for all the women who have gone before us and not openly discussed their acid-fuelled orgies? I can’t help but put this “news” down to the fact that A$AP Rocky has a penis, therefore he must be congratulated for penetrating vaginas, and the more the merrier. Can we all please take another second to think about what would have happened had a female artist, say Nicki Minaj or Azealia Banks, even Taylor fucking Swift, and how their sexual behaviour and romantic lives are documented in the media? These three artists, and just about every other female artist, have had their sex lives criticised, degraded and judged, with people offering up invalid and unwarranted “advice” on how they should live. Nicki’s booty’s always out, Azealia got with a girl, Taylor has too many boyfriends – and that’s just the media saying this, not them offering up tidbits freely. Imagine, just imagine, what we would be reading if the subject of this waste-of-time news story had a vagina instead of a penis – the vitriol we would see poured out over social media tearing this woman down to nothing. We can’t really be sure, because such a tale has never been aired (to my knowledge at least), and I refuse to believe some of the music industry’s leading ladies haven’t gotten down and dirty on a big night out. They simply don’t say it, and why would they when at every other turn they are subjected to the world and cast in such a bad light for being human?

Please don’t be mistaken in thinking this is the only platform I have made my distaste of this event heard either. I actually voiced my concern on FasterLouder‘s Facebook post, only to be called (by a fellow, male user) a “wet weekend” (??) and told to “go play golf, sweet heart” – a comment which received three likes at the time of me writing this. This is also slightly concerning – why am I being called names I don’t understand and told to go a play a sport I don’t like (which, by the way stands for Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden), for voicing my opinion? Why did two other males also like his comment? Why am I now the subject of mild social media trolling just for speaking this very plain truth?

Don’t get me wrong here. I love A$AP Rocky. Hell, I love the whole A$AP Mob. What I don’t love is waste of time bullshit glorifying male sexuality for no reason other than it was a male. Write all you want about A$AP Rocky’s upcoming album or his amazing new film clip; that’s stuff I, and many many others want to read about. But can we please keep future reportings of sexual conquests, regardless of gender, to a dull minimum – if at all?
