Get Acquainted with The Coathangers

2014 was a huge, HUGE year for female punk. Bands like Perfect Pussy and White Lung led the way with their relentless, guttural sounds, and showed everyone that punk is not only alive and well, but it’s also got a vagina.

I completely idolise, respect and admittedly obsess a little over this “movement” for lack of a better word. These women have taught me more in the past year than anyone or thing have taught me in the past 22. It’s taught me to be myself, and fuck anyone that doesn’t like it. It’s taught me to do whatever I want, and that I CAN do whatever I want. It’s taught me to take no shit and be a badass bitch.

It’s time we all get more than acquainted with these bands, and what better way to start off with than with The Coathangers; a three piece from Atlanta with a lot to say. Take this for example – they got Mastodon to dress in drag for the video clip of their song, Follow Me. Yeah, I know right.

“Never heard of ’em,” I hear you say. Well whatever rock your living under is too big, and you need to get out from under it. Starting off as a joke band in 2006, Julia (Crook Kid Coathanger), Meredith (Minnie Coathanger) and Stephanie (Rusty Coathanger) soon became a force to be reckoned with after the release of their third LP, 2011’s Larceny & Old Lace. Since then, the girls have catapulted to where they are now, and are known for their raucous and electrifying live shows.

2014 saw the release of fourth album, Suck My Shirt – a name they came up with when trying to salvage spilled tequila off someone’s shirt. Highlighting a maturity in songwriting as well as overall growth as a band, it’s angry, a little dangerous and extremely cool. The band responsible for songs like Don’t Touch My Shit and Nestle In My Boobies delivered one of my favourite albums from last year, and cemented themselves in the international scene, as well as my heart.

The Coathangers are now setting on a world tour and are headed to Europe and Australia for the first time! If there is a show you have to see, at least this month, it’s this one. Take my word for it – don’t miss The Coathangers! See dates below!
